ZOOM is an annual student event founded in 1997 at Earl Haig Secondary School. English teacher Mrs. Susan Popplewell and three students in her Grade 12 English class, Joe Frankel, Sam Kates, and Liam Eagle, created the festival as a statement of their passion for film and video, and as a response to the strong interest at Earl Haig in the field of filmmaking. That year, in its first home at the screening room of the Proctor & Gamble Professional Building on Yonge Street, the Festival was an elegant three-night event with a program of video shorts by Earl Haig students. The winner of the ballot for the People’s Choice Award for Best Picture was Joe Frankel for “The Roomer”, and the John Marcel Gomes Jury Prize (named after the retiring Head Librarian and resident Earl Haig film buff) went to Dave Lerech for “Blink”. The Festival was a hit and earned enough money to sponsor a second year.


Since then, the festival’s venue moved to the Earl Haig building itself. Recently the festival opened up international doors, accepting submissions from around the world. This widened the scope of the festival, giving students from abroad the chance to showcase their talent.



ZOOM is prestigious student event that is internationally renowned for showcasing undiscovered aspiring filmmakers. Awards are presented by the ZOOM Board of Directors to recognize exemplary achievement in promising filmmakers and encourage them to pursue their dreams within the film industry. Most recently, the local Toronto festival has broadened it's scope - accepting submissions from international students. The ZOOM Student Film Festival has lead many filmmakers to great success and connects thousands of filmmakers from around the world every year.


The festival reserves the rights to disqualify any entry that fails to comply with the following requirements:


i. Films must not exceed 7 minutes in running-time.


ii. All participants in the entry (excluding cast members) must be enrolled as a secondary school student at the time of submission.


iii. The festival organizers may, in their sole discretion, disqualify entries deemed unsuitable due to coarse language, violence and/or inappropriate situations that do not adhere to a 14A or lower rating in Canada.


iv. Each film must be submitted with a completed submission form (can be found at earlhaig.ca/zoom) or FilmFreeway submission info form.


v. Filmmakers must retain all rights to ownership of their work. This includes rights to music and images, and rights to include all persons, places and organizations included or depicted in the entry. The festival will not accept responsibility for any copyright infringement, falsified information, contract or legal issues incurred by the filmmaker(s) or their submission. The responsibility of obtaining copyright and protecting any proprietary interests in the material belongs solely to the filmmaker(s).


Submission Guidelines


i. Entries will only be accepted when submitted through FilmFreeway.

ii. Submission materials will not be returned.

iii. All submissions must be received by April 18th, 2017.

a. Entrants will be notified by email of acceptance by May 11th, 2017.

b. Entrants may not withdraw their entry from the festival after the film has been submitted and accepted. The festival organizers reserve the rights to withdraw admitted entries from the festival lineup with no notification.
